A lot of us know that we want to be designers, and we strive for admissions & we get one too. But what makes a successful designer is how aware & exposed he/she is. It is important to look out for what is happening in the world, to see what fashions are being followed & what affects people. What are major influences. And if you are a fashion designer, does not mean that you look only for fashion shows world over, anything & everything affects fashion, it can be art, architecture, food or even a political movements such as the ‘strikes’ by Anna Hazare.
It is at times that fashion follows a trickle up way, where street fashions or fashions by the common people are picked up & pave their way upwards towards the ramps. Look out for art & festivals, music plays a big role. College freshers & fests, DU, plays, social issues, movements, major deals in business as well! All play a major role.
Clothing is our expression, our way of showing our moods, representing what we stand for, thus, it affects & influences a lot. Similarly, other design fields, such as lifestyle products, a time where people tend to wear monotones & simple pieces, they would want their furniture also to be functional & simple, in plain colours & simple textures. Then accessorisation can take centre stage, because they can pump up the look.
So, it’s all about understanding what affects what & understanding the effects of influences. It is required that we keep ourselves open to things & exposure that creates awareness.
