Just as our lives have the basic 5 elements which make us. Design too has got its own 5 elements that make a good design. These elements are Form, Colour, Balance, Texture and Pattern. So, let us elaborate. The form is 2D of a shape. A silhouette. The basic outline of anything. The colour is what the light is reflecting. Which colour has what amount of intensity? The different colour schemes etc. Balance, this is one of the most important elements. How well do things coordinate and is everything soothing. Balance in colour is also important.
Thus, sometimes we dislike some pieces of art having maybe too much of yellow, the reason is the colour balance. Too much of yellow can also be neutralised...with black. Texture, it is the feel of a surface. The texture is an important factor when it comes to creating an experience, a feeling. Texture can be of two kinds: Visual and Tactile. One that you can see and make out and the other that has its own feel. And the last is the Pattern. A pattern is a linkage. A connection, repetition of a repeating unit. Human eyes since the starting have always liked finding connections. Or, in other words, a pattern is very alluring to the eyes. So, these elements help us in our designs. Since, you as design aspirants were yet unaware of these elements, thus, did not use them knowingly. At a tender start, we do things that we like, that suit to our eyes. Unknowingly, but certainly, all of us have a basic sense of what looks good or not. And these elements help us to fulfil this aim. But now that you know about these, you can prepare your work with the knowledge of these elements. Use them wisely, now not for your own likeness but to make your work more appealing and to reach to your audience.
