A lot of times, we have choices to make, choises between time and sleep, between competition and satidfaction, between your style and what the faculty wants, between perfection and completing all!
And at art and design colleges, from the day 1 you are taught that time is all that matters, you are late by some days, months or even hours and you will be nothing but a ‘sale’ material. Clothes that are late on the consignment schedule are what go on for selling in the ‘sales’. Which is, to a lot extent true!
Now, when as a student there are a lot of questions that haunt your mind such as “Will I be able to do this assignment on time?”, “Will I be able to perform my best in this time frame?”, “If I submit my work in this time frame, I won’t be able to perform my best.” etc. Thus, the jist is that at times, we get so much of work which we want to do it very well, but there is not enough time. Not enough time that we explore enough and then produce our best result. True, is the fact that at times, ideas do not click, or we require a set no. Of hours to put down our great ideas. Now, here comes the big question, that whether, I should go for completing the assignment with low grade work or rather, do as much as I can and submit less work?
There are two ground rules, that you should never compromise on.
Rule 1: Never compromise on your sleep.
Rule 2: Never compromise on your food.
So, next, what about work. Now, what I would suggest is that do a mix. Do as much as you can to the best of your capabilities, and the remaining, manage in the best possible way! Complete all the work, as bad work would leave the checker in a doubt to mark you, but no work would leave no room for any marks.
Also, you can always do both, work to the best of your capabilities and complete all the work too! The trick is that find the smarter way of doing things. At times, we think that hard work will pay off better, but, you are in a creative field, and smart work is what will take you ahead, will bring you recognition. Of course, people will find out that you found an easier, smarter way to do things, but they will always appreciate your thought process!
