Accessory Design

Accessory Design

Accessory design covers a wide arena. It deals with the designing of accessories of any kind. Accessory designing can be designing a pair of earrings to match with the outfit, or a bag to go with the leopard print dress or maybe a laptop cover and a lot more! So, accessories are supporting elements to fashion, creating a new fashion in themselves! Or, you can also say that accessories are add-ons to anything that create a special appearance to the thing. Accessories may not necessarily be functional. Many times, these are there to just add on to the aesthetics! Accessories thus, come under the big name of fashion. It can be a stylish sofa set, or a customised belt or anything!

If we broadly divide accessories, we can term it into fashion accessories and lifestyle accessories. Fashion accessories that are worn with apparel and on the human body in any way. And lifestyle accessories that include gadgets, cars, houses and their products. Accessory designers need to work 4-6 months ahead of the markets. The process of getting a product to the market is a long one. First, is the conceptualisation of the product, all the features embedded, and all the elements of it etc. Then, taking some inspiration, for designers, inspiration is very important. And can be anything, you can design headphones being inspired by superheroes! After this, we work out the practical aspect of the product as to how it will be used, what will work how, etc. Then, it comes to user-analysis, ask the users as to how do they like the product, how much are they willing to pay for it, what more of less do they want in it. And then finally, the product is launched in the market.

Institutes for accessory design include National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFTs) in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai; National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; Mahatma Jyoti Rao Phoole University, Jaipur; DNADS Institute, Hyderabad; Arch Academy of Design, Jaipur; Pearl Academy Of Fashion, New Delhi; Design & Innovation Academy (DIA), Noida; Gemological Institute of India (GII), Mumbai; Apeejay Institute of Design, New Delhi; National Institute of Jewellery Design and Technology, New Delhi; Creations - the School of Design and Technology, Pune; School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), Pune; and India International Trade Center, Mumbai.
